Course Description

This course emphasizes fundamental chemical concepts and inorganic structures. Topics to be discussed include: atomic and molecular structure; the periodic table and periodicity; chemical bonding; thermochemistry; kinetics and reaction rates, chemical equilibrium, acid- base and solubility equilibria; and basic thermodynamics. Electrochemistry, nuclear chemistry and the descriptive chemistry of the representative elements may be introduced as optional enrichment topics to advanced students. Laboratory experiments are captured in video as reference. These are designed to complement lectures.

Basic Organic Chemistry is made up of two semesters of lectures. There are two approaches being used: a. By functional groups: the two courses cover the functional groups sequentially in order of increasing complexity. The structure, stereochemistry, nomenclature, chemical properties, reactivity, basic synthesis and spectroscopic analysis of each functional groups are covered together. b. Structure and Reactivity: the first semester covers organic structure, stereochemistry, nomenclature and spectroscopic analysis, while the second semester shall focus on chemical properties, reactivity and basic synthesis.

This course is created for dry-run only for chem faculty to test LMS with respect to student's class performance.
