This course provides an introduction to the microscopic structure of human tissues, emphasizing the relationship between tissue architecture and function. Students will learn to identify the major tissue types—epithelial, connective, muscular, and nervous tissue—using light and electron microscopy. The course integrates theory with practical laboratory sessions, fostering an understanding of tissue organization at cellular and molecular levels, which is foundational for clinical practice and pathology.

Course Description:
The course aims to develop the foundational competencies of a Five-star Physician. It will place an emphasis on the role of physicians in relation to their patients, the health team, and society. It will also emphasize the history, trends, and future directions of the medical profession. The course highlights the roles and responsibilities, as well as ethical obligations, of physicians during interviews, consultations, health education, documentation, and other types of communication encounters. The students will be trained to become five-star physicians who will deliver patient-centered, compassionate, and professional medical care. The course will be delivered through lecture discussion, small reflective group discussions, case-studies, debates, in-class presentations, role-playing, simulation, and the utilization of standardized patients.
Course Objectives:
After completion of the course, the student will |
1. Trace the historical milestones and landmarks of medical professionalization, trends, and future directions. |
2. Describe the different roles and responsibilities of a five-star physician |
3. Apply the different ethical and bioethical principles in the practice of medicine |
4. Utilize the different principles and strategies of effective communication in medical practice |
5. Demonstrate various roles of the physician while working with the healthcare team, patients, and the society. |
6. Gather relevant assessment data from consumers / patients to inform health education and consultation practices |
7. Demonstrate the principles of teamwork and cooperative and collaborative learning in the carrying out the different class activities |
8. Use system-based perspective in the analysis of various health-related practices, initiatives, and programs |

The course aims to integrate the concepts of
health and disease, and apply this to individual patients, families and the
community as a whole. Level 1 courses
are aligned to Family and Community Medicine Course being a community-based
medical program. Roles and
responsibilities of a five-star physician is emphasized in all settings of
care. Moreover, students will have an opportunity to engage in their individual
assigned family through family visits and variety of community activities. Interactive lecture discussions, group activities,
case studies, research activities, reflection journal will be utilized as well.

The course is an introduction to research and research methods that gives an overview of research and its basics. This will be further deepened in the succeeding levels as research is a thread that runs from first to fourth level. The application of knowledge and skills gained in this introductory course will be done throughout the program.

This course intends to develop the competencies of the students for the practice of medicine through the integration of the traditionally known basic science disciplines of
gross and microscopic anatomy, embryology and physiology. Describing the process, these have been initially horizontally integrated and then later, closely interwoven, blurring their boundaries, for greater understanding of how each body system works. The learning is further enhanced with the inclusion of clinical correlation, clinical skills development and community integration sessions. The students are exposed to interactive lecture discussions, group activities, case studies and hands-on activities in the anatomy, histology and skills laboratories. The course is taught in three successive days divided into lecture and laboratory sessions. Though integrated, there is a delineation of embryology, gross anatomy, microscopic anatomy and physiology topics in the lectures and laboratory sessions for the week.

The course aims to determine the different parts and functions of the cell and integrate the knowledge of the biochemical processes occurring in the cell of the different organ systems with the understanding of the physiologic and pathophysiologic mechanisms in health and disease. Alongside MD 103 (Introduction to Research and Research Methods), the students will develop a research study relevant to biochemistry, human health and the future directions of the medical profession. The course will be delivered through small group discussion with plenary sessions, case-studies and research presentation.
