In response to the K - 12 curriculum of the basic education, the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) issued Memorandum Order No. 20 s. 2013. The said memorandum adopts a paradigm shift from a disciplinal general education courses to a more holistic and interdisciplinary general education courses, and this includes the offering of Mathematics in the Modern World (MMW). It is a 3-unit course that deals with the nature of mathematics, appreciation of its practical, intellectual, and aesthetic dimensions, and application of mathematical tools in daily life.
A study by Brown, Brown, & Bibby (2008) found out that the main reason why students discontinue studying mathematics is their perception that mathematics is boring, hard, and useless. In fact, many students dread math and develop dyscalculia, a math learning disability. The real challenge then for a mathematics teacher is how to clear up this wrong perception about mathematics and how to teach math in such a way that learners discover its beauty and power, and hope to further excite their minds.
