ELT 209 is a Master of Arts in Education-level course designed to equip English language educators with a comprehensive understanding of reading development and literacy practices. The course explores foundational theories, models of reading, and the developmental stages of literacy acquisition. It addresses the needs of diverse learners, including emergent readers, English language learners, and high school students requiring differentiated instruction. Emphasis is placed on integrating reading strategies, vocabulary development, comprehension techniques, and digital literacy into effective classroom practice. By the end of the course, graduate students will be able to design and implement research-based reading instruction tailored to varied learner profiles and content areas. Instructional methods include interactive lectures, collaborative workshops, case studies, and hands-on lesson planning. Students will engage in reflective journaling, peer teaching, and project-based learning to deepen their pedagogical understanding. Assessment will be based on class participation, the creation of instructional materials, reflective writing, and a school-based reading program as a final requirement.
