This course is about the fundamentals of biochemistry designed for non-chemistry major students. This includes students of biological sciences, agricultural sciences, environmental sciences, and education-major students. This course is in tandem with a laboratory course to better appreciate its importance and apply its concepts in real-life situations. The students should primarily be equipped with the tools and concepts in organic chemistry to help them understand better the different biomolecules in the living system. Generally, the concepts covered are the different biomolecules in the living systems, structure, properties, and common reactions in living systems. Explicit topics include a short review of the basic concepts in general & organic chemistry, proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, enzymes, gene expression, and protein synthesis. This course also includes relevant examples in medicine for students to understand health issues, medicinal advancements, and possible future research in biochemistry.
