Socio 109 is a proactive response to the Commission on Higher Education CHED) Memorandum Order No.1, series of 2019 to integrate peace education in the relevant higher education curricula. The CMO aims to contribute in attaining a just and lasting peace in the country leading to sustainable development. Thus, the course reviews a wide range of theories exploring the nature and causes of conflict, the possibilities for conflict resolution, and the foundations of peace. It provides students with a set of tools for the analysis of contemporary conflicts and shows how evidence and theory can be effectively used to understand peace and conflict. The course draws on a wide range of disciplines, including sociobiology, anthropology, social psychology, economics, and political science. It also gives students a practical understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of current approaches to conflict resolution and peace-building.
