This course gives students a comprehensive introduction to the quantitative research methods used
in the social sciences, specifically within sociology. It covers key concepts and tools for quantitative
data collection, analysis, and interpretation. Students will explore the connection between
quantitative methods and sociological theories, developing an understanding of how to formulate
and investigate sociological research questions. Building on prior knowledge (such as levels of
measurement, hypothesis testing, sampling, and observation modes), this course also introduces
ethical issues in research. It emphasizes the integral role of statistics in sociological research. By the
end, students will be equipped with foundational skills for advanced research, preparing them for the
Thesis Writing course (Socio 199), a requirement for sociology majors.
