This course tackles the fundamentals of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) focusing on the understanding of what a GIS is all about, its historical development, the different components and its practical application to the different fields or disciplines. It introduces the concepts of spatial reference systems and map projections, understanding geospatial data models, data acquisition, inputs and integration, GIS data types, data structures and spatial database, topology and spatial relationships, spatial analysis, modern trends of GIS, and GIS project design, issues and applications. The GIS course will be a combination of lectures, laboratory exercise, and workshops, attendance to GIS-related conferences/symposia and visits to different institutions using GIS and developing project-based works using a combination of data identification and collection, geospatial analysis techniques and analytical map development.
