This course provides a general introduction to the interdisciplinary field of urban and rural studies. Using a variety of Western and non-Western cities/communities as illustrative examples. The course aims to give a broad survey and understanding of the distinctive characteristics of urban and rural places. Students will learn definitions, concepts, and theories that are fundamental to the field. Topics covered include the Sociological Perspective; Social Problems & Issues; Theories of urban and rural sociology; Technology and urban and rural life; and urban planning and design.   

This course requires the students to conduct research study of urban or rural issues and concerns as their final requirement.
