This course will examine current theoretical and applied approaches to tropical ecology. Emphasis will be on developing problem solving skills, critical evaluation of ecological studies and an in-depth examination of theories and techniques used in species, population, community and ecosystem ecology. The graduate students in this class will understand deeply the interconnections among different concepts and facts in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystem concepts. They will also understand the relationships between basic ecological science and current environmental problems particularly in tropical countries such as the Philippines. The paper presentations and synthesis papers that the students will do in this class will delve on the application of tropical ecology concepts in environmental management and in recommending adaptive solutions to pressing environmental problems in the modern world.
