This course deals with the five (5) foundations of education namely the historical, psychological, socio-cultural, legal, and moral, the corresponding issues surrounding each foundation, and their relevance to the present educational practices. It also provides a survey of the backgrounds and philosophies of education with an emphasis on the current issues and trends, on significant educational innovations, and on the schools as social institutions. This course provides an avenue for graduate students to become responsive and resourceful in solving problems in their respective institutions.

Foundations of Education is one of the core subjects offered to the Master of Arts in Education (MAEd) students. It follows an asynchronous class mode in a flexible format. The students, in this course, will meet a few times with the instructor synchronously using a unanimously agreed available platform.

At the end of this course, students are expected to demonstrate their learning by way of designing and presenting a comprehensive oral presentation on topics or issues pertaining to the fundamentals of education and writing a research-enriched discussion paper.
