Geol 103 (previously Geol 101) is a lecture- laboratory course that presents the fundamental principles of mineralogy, including mineral chemistry, mineral identification, phase diagrams, mineral structures, and elementary crystallography. Also introduced in the course are studies on the optical properties of minerals including studies on light properties, polarization, pleochroism, and extinction angles among others.


Lecture classes will be done online while laboratory classes will adopt a blended learning approach. Laboratory exercises and written and/ or oral quizzes will be conducted after every topic in order to assess the students’ knowledge. Flexible learning will be promoted by uploading learning resources such as video lectures, supplementary readings, and PowerPoint presentations in Moodle every week. Examinations in both lecture and laboratory classes will be done face- to- face ensuring that proper health safety measures are practiced.
