CHEM A is a course that introduces the fundamental and basic chemical concepts of general chemistry. Focus areas include atomic and molecular structure, the

periodic table and periodicity, chemical bonding, thermochemistry, kinetics and reaction rates, chemical equilibrium, acid base and solubility equilibria and basic

thermodynamics. Electrochemistry, nuclear chemistry and the descriptive chemistry of the representative elements may be introduced as optional enrichment topics. It is offered with three hours of lecture and six hours laboratory session per week. This course is intended for mostly non-STEM students who will take up higher chemistry subjects like organic chemistry, biochemistry, analytical chemistry, etc. At the end of this course, the student is expected to gain an

understanding in chemistry, sharpen their quantitative skills in scientific context and develop critical thinking through their analysis of experimental data.
