The course will attempt to provide the students with advance understanding of the issues, policies, institutions, actors as well as the instruments and tools used for environmental planning and management. The approach to environmental management in the Philippines specifically in environmental quality, natural resource use, biodiversity, disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation, and socio-cultural resources will be explored.  The later part of the course will enable the students to examine the processes of environmental and spatial planning. This includes the (research and analysis for the) problem identification phase, plan formulation, implementation and the monitoring and evaluation. The students are encouraged to examine concepts and formulate and convincingly express their own views. Hence, part of the course is for the students to come up or update a management plan to solve complex ecosystem or environmental problem of interest. The process also involves a strategic planning workshop by teams in an online means to be not hindered and to keep everyone safe from the present challenges of the pandemic.

 

Students in this course shall be equipped with the competency of conducting complex planning, policy and decision making process to address environmental problems and in crafting solutions with recognition to the limits of the natural systems, the needs of the society, and applicability to varied governance systems.
